Shanghai Servers Shipping Q4
AMDZone Frontpage —
CNet says that AMD is on track to not only release Shanghai in Q4, but to also have servers shipping with it. Patla asserted that Shanghai is a "very power efficient product" and will perform much better than Barcelona because the smaller 45-nanometer process yields "a lot more (clock) frequency."
At the same frequency (speed), Shanghai will outperform Barcelona by about 20 percent, Patla said.
AMD is also boosting the size of the cache memory, which typically speeds performance, from 2 megabytes to 6 megabytes.
"We're also turning on HT3 (HyperTransport 3) and you'll ...

AMD Says New 'Shanghai' Chip Is Ready To Go
[H]ardOCP News/Article Feed —
... C|Net has an article posted today on the subject of AMDs announcement yesterday that the company is set to roll out its next-generation quad-core server processor code named "Shanghai." There is also a slide from AMD that shows a processor timeline from 2006 through 2011. The No. 2 processor maker wants to make one thing crystal clear: Shanghai is not Barcelona. The latter chip was rolled out in September 2007 to great fanfare only to be delayed a whopping eight months (or more, depending how the delay is calculated) due to production glitches and bugs. The chip was also ...

CNet has had a chat with AMD Server and Workstation General Manager Pat Patla, who painted an encouraging picture of the chipmaker's progress . Speaking of Shanghai the code name for 45nm Opterons Patla said AMD is working hard not to repeat past mistakes: "We had some mis-starts in getting Barcelona to market and wanted to bring as much velocity to Shanghai as possible." To that end, a lead engineer ...

... memory. The lineup shows that most of these chips would retain the 2000 MT/s system bus, and all of them come with 6 MB of level 3 cache. A new company slide sourced by C|Net shows that the Opteron processor could embrace DDR3 memory only by 2010, with the introduction of the Magny-Corus 12-core processor architecture. Until then, the Istanbul 6-core processor the is slated for H2, 2009, could be the company's flagship product.

... and, as a company, never do that again," said Pat Patla, general manager of AMD's server and workstation chip business.
Shanghai--a quad-core product targeted at servers--will be AMD's first 45-nanometer processor. (Barcelona is 65-nanometer.) Typically, the smaller the geometries, the faster and more power efficient the chip. Intel has been shipping 45-nanometer processors since last year and these processors now make up most of Intel's offerings.

It has now pinned its hopes on Shanghai, a quad-core processor for the server market, which happens to be its first processor to be synthesized on a 45-nanometer process. The company has begun shipping Shanghai to its OEM partners. Shanghai will be launched ahead of time, before the end of this year, unlike Barcelona that was plagued by delays. Pat Patla, general manger of AMD’s server and workstation division, candidly admitted to having learnt a lot from the blunder that was Barcelona . The chip is claimed to be ...
