In celebration of Earth Day we have an announcement from Seagate about their new Barracuda LP lineup. The marketing checklist is very similar to the Western Digital Caviar Green series: reduced spindle speeds, low noise, even lower power consumption, and performance that is more than acceptable for the entry level, home office, SOHO NAS, or HTPC audiences. With this new motor, Seagate measured 3W power consumption at idle and 5.6W during load. Also improved are the noise levels, which now are rated at 19 dB and 20 dB for idle and seek. Seagate introduces low-power desktop Barracuda drives

... in-between. According to the spec sheet, Seagates new drives offer a sustained data rate of 95MB/s and average latency of 5.5ms. That comes with a power profile of merely 6.8W when in use for the 2TB model and 5.5W when idle dropping down to 5.7W and 3W on the smaller 1TB unit. Aside from the odd spindle speed and reduced power profile, there's not much different from these drives compared to any other 3.5-inch desktop drive. They're comparatively pricey, as you can get a Barracuda 7200.12 for about 15 less than the 1TB LP5900.12, while a 1.5TB Barracuda 7200.11 will cost a similar amount less than the 1.5TB LP5900.12. However, the 2TB model seems to be the fastest consumer 2TB drive on the market and costing about the same as Seagate's competitor's 5,400rpm drives. You can find the Seagate product page here
