Exclusive: Retail Core i7 CPUs More Powerful than Originally Reported
If you’ve tried to research the differences between Intel’s top-end Core i7-965 Extreme Edition and the midrange 940 and budget 920 parts, you’re probably as confused as us. And we even have direct access to Intel. But the technical differences between these parts are enormously important for ...

Shocker! Retail Core i7 CPUs caught using DDR3-1600 memory
Engadget — ... The kids over at Maximum PC have told us a sordid tale involving Core i7 processors, "extreme heat and smoke damage," and a pair of jumper cables -- we'll spare you the details -- and have come to the realization that, contrary to popular belief, the ...

QPI Unlocked on recent Intel Core i7 920 and 940 CPUs
Madshrimps News RSS Feed — ... unlocked. But maybe not. After talking with Intel as well as some back channel contacts we had, we learned that the memory multipliers on production CPUs are unlocked. The reason our CPUs had locked multipliers, we were told by Intel, was because they are engineering sample chips. Engineering sample parts are pre-production CPUs provided to the media, OEMs, motherboard makers and various other hardware vendors to test and bring up components. These CPUs, we were told, are locked. http://www.maximumpc.com/article/fea... ally_reported

Retail Core i7-920, i7-940 have unlocked RAM multipliers
The Tech Report: News — ... , we pointed out that the cheaper two i7 models—the 920 and 940—both had lower QuickPath Interface and L3 cache clock speeds than the i7-965. We also said the cheaper CPUs only supported DDR3 memory speeds up to 1066MHz. However, Intel apparently neglected to tell us about a small detail: retail-boxed Core i7-920 and i7-940 processors have no such restrictions on QPI and RAM speeds. As Maximum PC reports , the two CPUs have the right multipliers for 4.8GT/s QuickPath and 1066MHz DDR3 memory speeds out of the box. However, users are free to pop into the BIOS and raise those ...

Did you know? Intel Core i7 actually kicks even MORE ass
hardCOREware Feed — ... The 965 normally has a QPI frequency of 6.4 GT/s, with the memory interface running at 1600 MHz. The 940 and 920 are meant to run with a 4.8 GT/s QPI and 1066 MHz memory interface. We were told by Intel that these were all locked, and there would be no way to change this, without raising the 133 MHz base clock, which as we know, can significantly impact stability. Naturally, all our Core i7 CPU’s are engineering samples from Intel, which are completely locked. But people are now discovering that their retail Core i7s have completely unlocked QPI and memory interface speeds. ...
