Atom N280 and GN40 to be expensive
Fudzilla —
... GN40 chipset is still something of a mystery, as all we know so far is that it'll support the faster 667MHz bus speed of the N280. We still believe the GN40 is a single package chipset solution, as this makes sense for the target market of this chipset and it will also reduce manufacturing cost for Intel. The new CPU and chipset will most likely be detailed during IDF Shanghai and we'd dare to guess that the platform will launch at Computex in early June. You can find more details here

... marginal boost we're looking for. The single core chip bests the N270's 1.6GHz clock with blazing 1.66GHz speeds, and a 667MHz bus over the original's 533MHz. What could perhaps be much more interesting is the promised Intel GN40 chipset that accompanies the N280, which there's currently very little info on, but hopefully does a little bit towards competing with NVIDIA's ION -- or at least pepping up that game of solitaire we've been working on. ... could set the clock speed at 2.00 GHz. What's more, Intel gets rid of the i945GSE chipset infamous for thermal characteristics increasingly unsuitable for ULPCs. It has been replaced with the supposedly cooler GN40 chipset. The N280 has begun surfacing on specification sheets of upcoming ASUS Eee PC models, but it will be only by 2Q, 2009 by the time we start seeing products based on it. Paired with the GN40, the Atom N280 is expected to be priced at US $60-65.

Intel Shipping Atom N280 Processor, Brings HD to Netbooks
Maximum PC —
Originally expected to show up in the second half of 2009, Intel has begun shipping its Atom N280 processor to PC makers several months ahead of schedule, says InfoWorld. Like its predecessor, the N270, the newest Atom also utilizes a single-core design and is intended for netbooks, but there's more than meets the eye than a simple clockspeed boost. Unlike the N270, which was paired with the 945GSE chipset, the N280 + GN40 chipset combo brings high-definition content to netbooks. The hardware-based high definition video decoder makes it possible to view 720p HD ...
