A 3D Understanding Of ATI's R600/700 Series
Phoronix — Late last year AMD had released R600/700 3D code and in late January had then released R600 3D register documentation to begin work on an open-source driver stack supporting the latest ATI Radeon GPUs with 3D acceleration. One of AMD's partners in this open-source work has been Novell, which wrote an open-source utility to begin sending 3D commands to the GPU in a very primitive form and to analyze the different operations. This utility is called r600_demo, which we explain in full detail here . The key author of r600_demo is Matthias Hopf , which ...

R600/700 EXA & X-Video Code Merged To Master
Phoronix — In late December AMD had released R600/700 3D code that allowed open-source triangles to be drawn and a AtomBIOS decompiler also came out of Novell just a few days later. In late January we were then greeted by public R600/700 3D documentation . While no working 3D support has yet to appear in the Mesa stack, the 2D EXA acceleration and X-Video support has matured relatively quickly. This work has now made its way into the mainline code for the open-source ATI stack. With sufficient testing having been done, AMD's Alex ...

Power Management: ATI Catalyst vs. Open-Source ATI Driver
Phoronix — Yesterday we broke the news that AMD will stop supporting the R300-500 GPUs in the Catalyst driver . There have been well over one hundred posts in the Phoronix Forums from ATI customers upset with this decision, but fortunately, there is first-rate open-source support available. AMD continues to release documentation and code while the X.Org development community has been hard at work on the xf86-video-ati and xf86-video-radeonhd drivers along with Mesa and Gallium3D components. The main problem ...

Open-Source R600 OpenGL Support May Come Soon
Phoronix — In late December AMD had released open-source R600/700 3D code and a month later they released the 3D documentation that covers these Radeon HD 2000/3000/4000 series graphics cards. The initial code drop didn't do much good for end-users as they couldn't do much more than render a couple triangles , but over the past few months the open-source developers have been working on the proper Mesa support for the R600/700 graphics cards in a private code repository. Now this code may finally be pushed out to the general public in the near future. As AMD is still ...

AMD Releases R600/700 Programming Guide
DriverHeaven.net — ... AMD ended out last year by releasing basic R600/700 3D code that allowed the rendering of open-source triangles, but not much in the way of usable OpenGL acceleration for end-users. Just last month AMD had then pushed out new R600/700 code that plugged into the Mesa stack and is being used as the groundwork for the providing open-source OpenGL acceleration on the Linux desktop with newer ATI graphics processors. In between December and April, AMD had also released extensive documentation covering the 3D engines on the R600 and R700 graphics ...
