Not everyone will need a four or eight drive NAS device, but a two drive NAS is certainly something nice to have at home. It's big enough to store several terabytes of data and meets the bare minimum to create a mirrored setup for ultimate reliability.

You can count on performance in the range of 20 to 40MB/s depending on file size and transfer rate. The difference between RAID 0 and RAID 1 is large enough that you'll notice a small increase in speed but at the same time small enough that you won't be waiting forever while data is duplicated to both drives.
