Review: Philips 42PFL9664H LCD TV
TechRadar: Computing reviews —
Rival manufacturers of a delicate disposition should look away now, because the super-slim Philips 42PFL9664H LCD TV is about to deal your self confidence a serious blow. Other companies might be more adventurous and plenty are cheaper, but few seem able to deliver the last word in flatscreen design and specification in a particular price range quite so consistently as Philips. The 42PFL9664H is the Dutch maestro's latest mid to higher-end LCD and comes bristling with state-of-the-art spec, the best examples of audio-visual and multimedia gadgetry currently found on TVs sets and wraps it all up in a frame that makes just about every one of its peers seem plain. Review: LG 32SL8000 LCD TV

We've seen the 'one pane' design before from LG, but on this 32-incher it's particularly effective; a single sheet of glass stretches right across the front of the TV and, with no need for a dedicated border, the illusion is of a 'borderless' TV. It's not – a black screen surround instead sits under the glass – but an upward curved edge on the TV's top and a simple dark aluminium strip along the bottom helps create a classy, understated look. Don't think its svelte design means it takes up less room than similarly sized sets, because that's not the case, but the LG 32SL8000 does remain a prime candidate for wall hanging. That's exactly what's on offer from the 32-inch LC-32LE600E, but it's also got something very special up its sleeve: an LED backlight. And here that new technology is going for a song. Excluding the fact that it uses an all-new (certainly at this price) Full Screen LED ...
Review: Sony Bravia KDL-40Z5800 LCD TV

Although the current recession might have given many of the big names in AV quite a battering over the past 18 months, one name at least seems to have not only survived relatively unscathed but actually potentially benefited from the hard times: Freesat. The BBC/ITV-led, free-to-air satellite broadcasting system, complete with a couple of HD channels, has attracted people to its service far faster than the vast majority of industry analysts – and us, to be honest – ever predicted. The latest figures show a viewer base of 600,000 households as of September 2009, with a 50 per cent growth occurring in the quarter leading up to the release of that figure. At the same time, Sky has for once struggled ...
