More 3G iPod Shuffle drama
Fudzilla — ... headphones available for the 3G iPod Shuffle and everyone is waiting for Apple to release these. We didn't think it was a great idea from day one, but this "new" control system seems to be getting worse and worse for every day that goes by. You could always make the Shuffle live up to its name, by using your own headphones and just switch it on, as it'll still play your music, but you won't have any means to control it. You can find Boingboing's ripped apart controller unit here and iLounge's report ...

Shuffle Headphones have Authentication chip
TweakTown's News RSS Feed — ... that they've collaborated with Apple for the past few months developing the technology. It seems safe to conclude two things. One, manufacturers who want their headphones to work with the shuffle need to work with Apple in order to get access to the tech inside the authentication chip. Two, only people who Apple "like" are going to get this tech and make compatible headphones—but it's likely that Apple likes almost anybody with the money to pay for licensing. Apple Suicide: Obsessive Control
Today @ PC World — ... . The blog, famous for its detailed product reviews, doesn't say how it knows Apple included an authentication chip in the new headphones, only that it has.   A further investigation by BoingBoing discovered a mystery chip named 8A83E3 buried in the Apple earbuds' architecture that may be the authentication chip. The reaction to this rumor has been mild surprise. Some have argued this policy has been good for Apple financially and may lead to higher quality headphones from third-party vendors.
